July 2009

The CanAm Piano Duo has returned from a fantastic trip to Sicily for the Ibla Grand Prize Competition.  We received a Distinguished ranking from the jury, which is just below the "winner's circle."  We feel very proud of our accomplishment, but more importantly we enjoyed performing for the audiences, meeting and getting to know the other musicians, and seeing the beautiful country of Italy!

February 2009

We have been invited to give a presentation at the World Piano Pedagogy Conference in Novi Sad, Serbia from May 4-8, 2009.  Due to teaching schedules, we will be unable to attend in person, but they gave us the option to send a DVD of our presentation, so that is what we will do!

November 2008

We have been accepted into the 2009 IBLA International Piano Competition in Ibla, Sicily. This competition has an excellent format that has us already scheduled to give four performances.  We will also have a performance for the competition jury in the concert hall.  Decisions on winners are made after all the performances are completed. Karen and I will bring along our spouses (Lance and Val, and our new baby Jacob).

May 2008

The CanAm Piano Duo were named Silver Medalists at the 2008 International Chamber Music Ensemble Competition!!  We performed at the Winner's Concert at the First Church of Boston for a wonderful audience with other ensembles involved in the competition.  Karen and I had a fantastic time in Boston, and are trying to find an excuse to back again soon!  What a great city!

April 2008

We have been invited to perform in the second round of the 2008 International Chamber Music Ensemble Competition, sponsored by the Chamber Music Foundation of New England.  We will travel to Boston at the end of May for the competition.  This is a terrific opportunity for us, and we are excited to compete!

More fantastic news:  our grant proposal was a huge success (many thanks to Karen for her great work on this!).  We can now safely say that the commission for Two Pianos and Percussion by David Maslanka will now proceed as planned!  We are thrilled with this news, and will keep updates coming as the piece develops.  Our sincere thanks to the Kenan Institute and the North Carolina School of the Arts for their support.

March 2008

Our presentation at the MTNA National Convention in Denver, CO, entitled Bridging the Gap: Focus on Intermediate Piano Concertos, was well-received by over 200 people in attendance.  We received many wonderful comments about our lively presentation style and the artistic performances of the works.  The handout for this presentation is available under our "Presentations" link above.  Thanks for attending!

January 2008

Our commissioning project with composer David Maslanka is moving forward, with the completion date set for September 2009 and an extensive performance tour to follow in 2010.  You can't say we don't plan ahead!  This will be a large-scale work for two pianos and percussion, and given the peerless reputation of our composer in the writing for these instruments, I suspect this piece will make a huge impact!

We are currently in the "grant proposal" stage, with our sights set on a wonderful new commissioning program set up through the North Carolina School of the Arts and the Kenan Institute for the Arts.  Keep your fingers crossed!

December 2007

We had the opportunity to perform at the Interlochen Arts Academy in Interlochen, Michigan this month.  We also worked with the piano students in a masterclass, and listened to them perform for each other in their pre-jury exam performances.  What a terrific group of talented and motivated students!  And, to top it all off, we did a live radio interview and performance on Interlochen Public Radio, an NPR affiliate.  What a trip!

Enjoying the Clark Fork River near Missoula with our spouses, Valerie and Lance.  (We can't play the piano ALL the time!)  Karen seems to be enjoying herself.
